Leevi Lemmetty

I like to tell stories in a family friendly situational comedy style with imperfect but empathetic characters. Empathy and understanding one another’s flaws sit often at the heart of the stories I want to tell. Humour, for me, is a powerful way to approach bigger themes. Whether it’s diversity, environmental issues, or simply the truth behind a silly butt joke.

I've been always drawn into anything to do with computer graphics. I love the idea and the possibilities that the technology has offered me. I'm always trying to learn and try to figure out how to use the latest things to tell my stories. I've always seen technology for me as more of an possibility than an obstacle.

In 2012, I co-founded the production company Ink and Light with producer Tamsin Lyons, who I met while studying at the National Film & Television School in the UK. Through the company, I’ve developed, produced and directed children’s television projects from the ground up — building ideas from early development through to final delivery.

My role often extends beyond directing. I collaborate with individual writers, run writers’ rooms, pitch projects, shape the visual language of each film, assemble creative teams, build production pipelines and work with broadcasters. Our projects have been shown on major networks including Disney, Sky, RTÉ and YLE, as well as at film festivals worldwide. Some of our films have also been used as the foundation for educational programmes, helping children engage with themes of diversity and environmental responsibility.

My short films have been nominated for awards including the Royal Television Society’s Best Animation award and the McLaren Award for New British Animation at the Edinburgh International Film Festival. I have also adapted two of my short films into children’s books, The Red Herring and Papa’s Boy, both published in Finland and translated into several languages.

Previous to stepping out as a director, I worked as a 3D animator, online editor and art director for film, broadcast and games companies.
